Identifying Features
Identifying mushrooms requires careful observation and attention to detail. Unlike plants, the most important features are often hidden under the cap or require close examination of texture and smell.
Fertile Surface (Hymenium)
This is where spores are produced. Look for gills (paper-like), pores (small holes), teeth (spines), or a smooth surface. Note how they attach to the stem.
The Stem and Base
Examine the shape, color, and presence of a ring (remnant of the partial veil) or a volva (cup at the base, remnant of the universal veil). Check if the stem is hollow or solid.
Spore Print
This is often the final step. By letting spores drop onto paper, you get a precise color (white, black, brown, pink) which is essential for separating similar-looking genera.
