Classification

The fly agaric is one of the most recognizable mushrooms in the world, with its bright red cap dotted with white warts. While iconic, it contains psychoactive compounds (muscimol and ibotenic acid) and should never be consumed.

Ectomycorrhizal symbiont, forming mutualistic relationships with birch, pine, spruce, and fir trees. Common in boreal and temperate forests.
